Greater El Paso 3.5 ladies embrace after a doubles victory that helped their team clinch the USTA Southwest Section Championships.

Nearly 600 players from 44 teams made their way to Tucson Aug. 1-3, for the USTA League presented by Chrysler Southwest Section Championships. When the dust cleared, nine teams claimed Section championships crowns in their respective NTRP levels, and earned qualifying spots in USTA National League Championship events held later this year in September and October.

The Section's top NTRP teams in each gender took part in the three-day tournament, which was held at three tennis facilities in the Tucson area -  including the Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, the Hilton El Conquistador Country Club and the Tucson Racquet and Fitness Club.

Pool play in nine separate divisions began on Friday, Aug. 1 and continued through early Sunday afternoon, when nine champions were crowned.

In 3.0, the Greater El Paso men's team swept through their bracket, notching a 4-0 team record, easily outdistancing the second place finisher from Northern New Mexico. In women's 3.0, the home Tucson club from Southern Arizona finished with an unblemished 5-0 record to snag the title.

In 3.5, the men's team from Central Arizona (Mesa, Ariz.) eked past a fellow Central Arizona squad (Sun Lakes, Ariz.) to claim the Section Championship. Both CAZ teams finished with 4-1 records in pool play, but the Mesa team advanced on matches won. In 3.5 women, the Greater El Paso team finished with a spotless 5-0 weekend.

Cameron Drummond (Central Arizona, 4.5) helped propel his team on to the National Championships.

In 4.0, Greater El Paso's men's team claimed the title. The seven-team pool was the largest division in the tournament, and the GEPTA squad finished with a perfect 6-0 record. In women's 4.0, a Northern Arizona squad from Flagstaff edged Northern New Mexico in pool play by a single match victory (18 to 17) to earn a national championship berth.

Central Arizona teams claimed both the men's and women's events in the 4.5 division. And, in 5.0 men, a team from Southern Arizona (Tucson) earned their national championship spot.

A USTA Southwest Player Party cookout sponsored by Golfsmith Golf & Tennis was held on Saturday night from 6-9 p.m. at Tucson Racquet Club, with nearly 400 attendees eating, drinking and dancing the night away to the tunes of local band, Tumblin' Dice.

Angie Allen (El Paso, 4.0) was just one of about 600 players who called Tucson their weekend tennis home Aug. 1-3 for the USTA Southwest Adult League Section Championships.
A smorgasbord of player gifts were given out at the party, including Head/Penn racquet bags, Wilson and Babolat posters and accessories, as well as other nice items like gift cards from Golfsmith, USTA chairs, US Open shirts, and even a couple of Apple Ipod Shuffles. A special Emily Austin Swarovski crystal tennis necklace was also raffled off, with proceeds benefiting the USTA Southwest Tennis Foundation.

A special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers who worked tournament desks and to the three host sites who allowed us to use their sites for the weekend.

Congratulations to our newest USTA Southwest Adult League champions, and good luck at the USTA League National Championships (complete schedule of Nationals - click HERE).
